FAQ (massage therapy)
What should I expect during a massage?
For first-time clients, massage sessions usually begin by reviewing a "Client Intake" form and asking some general health questions. This is necessary because there are some conditions for which massage is not appropriate. Some conditions require the approval of your health care provider prior to receiving a massage. Your well-being is of utmost concern, so always tell the massage therapist if you have a medical problem, even a minor one.
The massage therapist will then leave the room while you get ready for the massage. You are free to remove as much clothing as you are comfortable with.
You will then rest and relax on a padded massage table, covering yourself with a fresh linen. Your privacy and modesty will be maintained at all times.
What areas will be worked on?
Massage is usually done on the head, face, neck, shoulders, arms, abdomen, legs, feet, back, and hip area. Please let your massage therapist know if there are any of these areas you would prefer be avoided.
What does a massage feel like?
Massage strokes are gentle but firm. A massage usually begins with flowing strokes to calm the nervous system and release tension in the superficial muscles. Additional strokes may include kneading, compression, tapping, and joint movement along with other techniques to relax specific areas.
Massage should not hurt. Effective massage techniques work with your body's natural responses without force. Always tell the massage therapist if you feel any discomfort so that the massage techniques or pressure levels can be adjusted more appropriately.
People are often surprised that massage does not tickle. If you are extremely ticklish, tell the massage therapist so that modifications can be made or so that your areas of sensitivity can be avoided altogether.
What if I feel uncomfortable?
Let the massage therapist know if you are uncomfortable at any time. Feel free to ask questions about things you might not understand.
It is also very important that you know that you have the right to stop the massage at any time - for any reason.
What should I do during the massage?
Massage is the most beneficial if you can allow yourself to be comfortable and relaxed during the session. Whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Breath naturally.
Talking during a massage depends on your needs. Some people need silence, while others prefer more social interaction. Feel free to give feedback about what you like or do not like during the session.
Most importantly, relax and enjoy this special space of time set aside just for you.
How long will the massage last?
A massage session is usually one hour in length. It takes this amount of time to be deeply relaxing. Times can be varied however. A half hour can be a great introduction to massage. It might be enough time to work on one or two specific areas of tension or pain.
Massage is finished all too soon, no matter what amount of time is allocated for it. When the massage is over, the massage therapist will leave the room while you dress. Leave the table at your leisure. Massage is very relaxing. Therefore, you might have to reorient yourself before getting up from the table.
